About this piece
Something approaches with an ominous murmur deep in the piano's low register. Then chords burst out and the polonaise rhythm takes its first step. Here the elegant processional dance of the nobility becomes a dark and violent story.

When it was written
The polonaise is a dance in three that grew out of the processional dances of the Polish nobility. Couples walked in stately fashion to open a ball, so its rhythm carries a proud stride. Chopin wrote polonaises from childhood; one he composed at about seven was even published in Warsaw.
Soon after Chopin left Warsaw in 1830, an uprising against Russian rule broke out in Poland and was crushed the following year. For Chopin, now living in Paris, the polonaise was no longer a decoration for the ballroom. In his hands this dance became a vessel for longing and anger toward his homeland.
A question to think about
Chopin borrowed the elegant processional dance of the nobility to carry the dark and violent feelings of people who had lost their country. The same dance took on a completely different meaning in a different time.
Should art keep its distance from the pain of politics and society, or should it hold that pain? What does art gain and lose when it carries a society's suffering?
